Fishing With Kids

"Where do fish keep their money?…In the river bank"

Here are a few tips on not only taking the kids fishing, but how to keep them interested and excited about it. It is common knowledge that kids get distracted and lose interest in activites easily. One of the most important things to remember when fishing with kids is to keep them excited, involved, and entertained. When they catch a fish, make sure to share their excitement and tell them how great they did and maybe even throw in a high five. It is important to be happy and excited for them, even if they are catching more fish than you are.

One aspect of fishing with kids is that they can constantly want to switch from bait to lure and back again. The solution to this problem is to first show them in detail, how to bait a hook, and second, to attach a swivel to their line so they can switch their lure themselves. By showing them how it is done, they will feel important and special because they are able to be independent and it is a great memory they can carry with them for the rest of their life. Don't forget that you were once the kid who was learning to fish, and although it can be a frustrating experience, keep your cool and remember that the faster they learn, the faster you can enjoy the experience together.

So now that you have the swivel attached and have shown them how to deal with their own equipment, the next battle is that they continue to get caught on rocks and weeds. After telling them to stop pulling and explaining that they did not catch the worlds heaviest fish, attach a bobber about 12 inches from the swivel and let them have another go.

Bobbers can be great tools to use with kids because it gives them something to focus on and it gives them a visual on when they should start reeling in that line.It is important to make them feel special and a great way to do that is to buy them their own tackle box and fill it with tackle, your cast offs can be great for this.

The biggest point to this section is to help you remember that you are fishing for fun and to create great lasting memories with your kids. These memories will make great stories in the future as well. Don't forget that you are there for them and the time may come during the day that all they want to do is skip rocks. So put down your pole and skip rocks with them, show them how far you can skip them, considering they probably caught more fish than you did.Happy Fishing!
